The UK government's £500m Sovereign AI Fund, which backs domestic artificial intelligence startups, announced on 14 October 2026 that it has invested in Augur, a British security company. The fund did not say how much it put in.

Augur says its software can turn fragmented networks of sensors into a real-time intelligence layer serving national security and public safety. The company, co-founded by people including two former Palantir executives, counts Transport for London among its users and says its technology helps strengthen security and monitor crowds.

Where conventional CCTV stores footage to be reviewed after the fact, Augur aims to help security teams spot risks while they are still unfolding.

Alongside the investment, the fund is granting Augur access to Isambard-AI, described as the UK's most powerful AI supercomputer. Augur plans to use it to train on large, complex multi-camera datasets. The startup raised $15 million in June in a seed round led by Plural.

Explaining the deal, the Sovereign AI Fund said: "Britain needs this capability and should own it." It added that security technology should be developed domestically, by a team that has demonstrated security and privacy need not be at odds.

The fund typically writes cheques of £5m to £10m, mostly at seed and Series A, and can either lead or join rounds. Its remit spans model development, AI drug discovery and agentic AI, and its portfolio already includes infrastructure startup Callosum, Olix and Isomorphic Labs.

The deal extends Britain's push for home-grown AI capabilities into security and surveillance. It also lands in a sensitive area: AI-driven crowd monitoring in public spaces is likely to draw scrutiny over privacy and civil liberties.
