ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: Which AI Assistant Fits You?

A fair look at three leading AI assistants: strengths, free tiers, prices, best uses, and why vendor benchmark claims need context.

There is no single winner in ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude. The right pick depends on what you need. The common view in tech coverage: ChatGPT has the broadest feature set, Gemini fits best if you live in Google's ecosystem or work with very long documents, and Claude is a favourite for coding and long-form writing.

If you only want a free assistant, Gemini and ChatGPT tend to give you more. Claude's free tier has the tightest limits of the three. Several details below could not be verified against official pages while this guide was prepared, so we note the source and date for each claim.

Are ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude free?

All three have a free version, but the limits differ. ChatGPT Free costs $0. OpenAI said it would test ads in the Free and Go tiers; whether that has rolled out could not be confirmed.

As of 2025, the free Gemini app offered Flash models plus limited access to Pro models. Claude's free plan has tighter usage caps than its rivals, has historically offered fewer image and voice features, and does not generate images.

Free-tier limits and model access change often. Check each company's own page before you commit to a workflow.

How much do ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude cost?

For ChatGPT, the third-party site gradually.ai lists these 2026 prices: Free $0, Go $8 a month, Plus $20 a month, Pro Codex $100 a month and Pro Max $200 a month. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 monthly, with a two-user minimum. Enterprise is priced on request.

The same source says Pro split into two tiers on April 9, 2026. Pro Codex targets heavy coders with higher Codex limits, while Pro Max keeps the top Deep Research and GPT-5 Pro limits. That split and date rest on a single source, so confirm them on OpenAI's official pricing page.

For Gemini, as of 2025 the paid plan was Google AI Pro at about $19.99 a month, bundled with 2TB of Google One storage. Google AI Ultra cost about $249.99 a month in the US. We could not confirm these are current.

For Claude, the plans known in 2025 were Free, Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max at $100 or $200 a month, Team and Enterprise. These may also have changed.

All figures are in US dollars. In some markets, including Türkiye, prices are often set locally and may include or exclude VAT, so what you pay can differ. Check the in-app price for your country.

Which AI assistant is best for which task?

ChatGPT is the all-rounder. It bundles image generation, voice, memory, Deep Research, agent mode, GPTs and Codex. OpenAI said in 2025 it had roughly 700–800 million weekly users. If you want one app that does a bit of everything, it is a sensible starting point.

Gemini works inside Gmail, Docs and Android. Its context window of around 1 million tokens makes it handy for very long files, and it is strong on multimodal and video work through Veo. Deep Research and NotebookLM add research tools, and the storage bundle adds value for existing Google users.

Claude stands out for coding, especially with Claude Code, plus long documents and writing quality. Anthropic says it emphasises safety and refuses fewer reasonable requests; that is the company's own description. People doing careful analysis or long-form drafting often reach for it.

Can you trust AI benchmark scores?

Scores on MMLU, GPQA, SWE-bench, AIME or HLE in a launch post are vendor claims. They are measured under settings the vendor picks, such as "with tools" or "pass@1", and companies naturally choose settings that flatter their models. When you see one, look for the model card and the test conditions.

For a more independent picture, try LMArena (lmarena.ai), which ranks models on human preference votes, Artificial Analysis (artificialanalysis.ai), the official SWE-bench leaderboard and Epoch AI. Rankings shift every few weeks, so read them as "as of this date" rather than a permanent verdict.

We deliberately leave out specific scores here. We could not verify current rankings on publication day, and a stale number would mislead more than it helps.

Which is best for languages other than English?

All three handle major languages such as Turkish well in everyday use. However, we found no authoritative, independent benchmark for Turkish specifically, so naming a clear winner would be guesswork.

The practical test is your own work. Give the same email, summary or coding question to each free version and compare the answers side by side.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with your main need: images and voice, Google integration, or code and long writing. Then try the free tier for a few days to see whether you hit the limits.

Privacy matters too. Each service has its own settings on whether your chats are used for training, and business plans often have different terms. In Türkiye, personal data falls under the KVKK data protection law, so read the settings carefully before sharing work data.

Availability varies by country. ChatGPT Go launched first in India and then expanded, but its availability and price in each market should be checked. Google has offered free AI Pro deals to students in some countries; whether those still apply in 2026 is worth confirming.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude better?

It depends on your use. ChatGPT has the widest feature set, Gemini suits Google users and long documents, and Claude is popular for coding and long-form writing.

Which AI assistant has the best free tier?

Gemini and ChatGPT generally offer more on their free tiers. Claude's free limits are the tightest and it does not generate images. Limits change often, so check the official pages.

How much is ChatGPT Plus?

According to gradually.ai's 2026 listing, Plus is $20 a month and Go is $8 a month. Local prices can differ, so confirm on OpenAI's pricing page.

Which is best for coding?

Claude, particularly with Claude Code, is widely used for programming. ChatGPT offers Codex, and gradually.ai reports a dedicated Pro Codex tier for heavy coders.

Are AI benchmark results reliable?

Launch-post scores are vendor claims measured under settings the vendor chooses. Independent leaderboards such as LMArena, Artificial Analysis and the official SWE-bench board are better guides, but check the date.
