YouTube has begun a limited test of Ask YouTube, an AI-powered feature that appears in desktop search results, according to reports published on October 19, 2026. The experiment is available only to certain signed-in users in the United States who search in English. It is designed to give direct answers to open-ended questions and how-to queries.

YouTube's traditional search ranks videos that match a query and sends viewers to them. In the test, an AI-generated preview can sit above the standard list of videos. Someone searching for how to remove stains from painted walls, for instance, may see a summary of possible methods before opening any individual video.

Text advice paired with video moments

The preview goes beyond a plain written summary. It combines text-based recommendations with timestamped key moments drawn from relevant videos, letting viewers jump straight to the part of a long clip that contains the answer they need.

A "Show more" option expands the AI response, and users can ask follow-up questions. Scrolling down still reveals the conventional video results. The result is a conversational experience that lets people keep exploring a topic without leaving the search page.

What it could mean for creators

The approach closely resembles the AI-generated overviews Google has added to its search engine. Those features worried publishers because they can reduce the need to click through to websites, and a similar concern now applies to video.

If a viewer can get the gist of a several-minute tutorial from a summary, they may never open the video. Fewer clicks could mean less watch time and lower ad revenue for some channels, particularly those focused on education, guides and practical fixes. No data has yet been shared on how the limited test is affecting actual view counts.
