GridCraft and WordCraft: AI-built open-source rivals to Microsoft Office

GridCraft, DeckCraft and WordCraft, free open-source alternatives to Excel, PowerPoint and Word built by a single developer using AI agents, are now on GitHub.

Three open-source applications pitched as free alternatives to Microsoft Office's core programs have been published on GitHub. GridCraft targets Excel, DeckCraft targets PowerPoint and WordCraft targets Word, and they are reported to have been written with the help of Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 model. The project drew wide attention in Turkish tech media on October 18, 2026.

The Office clones follow an earlier effort aimed at Adobe's Creative Cloud suite. According to reports, free open-source counterparts to seven Adobe applications, including Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro, have been developed. Rather than a large engineering team, the work is attributed to one developer running multiple AI agents in parallel.

How the software is distributed

GridCraft can be downloaded for Windows, macOS and Linux from the releases page of the storytold/gridcraft repository on GitHub. Windows users can choose between an MSI installer and a portable build that runs without installation. The spreadsheet program is said to handle XLSX files, and all of the applications are collected on a page called Artcraft Launcher.

Users are advised to verify downloads against published SHA-256 checksums to avoid counterfeit sites. Fake copies of popular software are a common vehicle for malware, which makes that check more than a formality.

Open questions

Several claims around the project have not been independently verified. It is unclear who measured the 86 percent compatibility figure cited for the apps, or how. The developer's reported clean-room approach, rebuilding functionality without access to the original code, also raises questions about potential legal challenges.

It also remains to be seen whether the tools are ready for everyday or enterprise use, whether being open source makes them secure by default, and how a free project of this scale will be sustained over time.

Still, the effort is a striking illustration of how AI-assisted coding could reshape the software business. If complex desktop suites long considered costly and difficult to build can be approximated by one person, the moat protecting subscription-based vendors may be thinner than assumed. Real-world use and independent testing will determine whether these clones can genuinely compete with the established products.
